Maze

Maze is our keeper puppy from our first litter between Victra and Taiko. She was a special puppy from the very beginning. She captured everyone's hearts, with her calm, confident, watchful demeanor, and was every guest's favourite puppy, as she would come in close for snuggles.

It may be relevant to disclose that Maze does not live with me full-time. Shortly after breeding Victra in early 2023, I discovered that I myself was also expecting a human baby! It would not have been fair to any puppy we kept to have my attention split between human baby and dog baby and so, we reluctantly forwent a puppy from that litter.

Instead, some of our close friends co-owns Maze with me, and she resides with them in Ottawa, approximately 15 minutes from my house. I will still be responsible for whelping her litter and raising her puppies.

Depending on the genetics of the male used, Maze's puppies may or may not have a black mask, and could range in colours from cream, red, or wolf-gray (agouti).

Temperament

Tell me about Maze!

If I had to pick one word to describe Maze, it would be sweet. She was the most human-focused and affectionate puppy from the very beginning, and she is still incredibly bonded with her "pack" as an adult.

Her temperament test conducted at 7.5 weeks revealed that she was a very well-balanced puppy, moderately assertive with people and dogs, moderately biddable, moderate energy level, moderate environmental focus and high on the confidence scale.

Like Victra, not only is Maze intelligent, but she's clever as well. She'll pick up on new tricks quickly, gets bored fast, and isn't easily outsmarted. When she wants something, she'll find a way to get it, and vice versa.

Words that her temperament test evaluator used to describe Maze's personality as a puppy are: focused, quiet, thoughtful, engaged, calm, persistent, and thinks before acting.

Words that her family would use to describe Maze's personality are: passionate, stubborn, observant, and expressive. She's not sight sensitive nor noise sensitive. I've snapped photos of her just snoozing while chaos with other dogs and people ensue!

Maze was a fairly rebellious teenager and frequently turned off her ears, chewed some things she wasn't supposed to, and was fairly mouthy. She's now settled down dramatically, and while she still likes holding people's hands with her mouths, it's evident that she's starting to mature and listens much better.

How is Maze with other dogs?

Maze is very friendly with other dogs. She is well-socialized and is very playful. She loves to chase and be chased. She can be persistent if there’s a dog she really wants to play with but she is on the submissive side with new dogs.

How is Maze with people and children?

I find Maze is on the more social side for a Eurasier. While she can be wary around new people and prefers to watch them first, she warms up quickly, especially if high-value treats are involved. She typically does not approach new people on her own accord.

Maze is great with kids. Having grown up in a household with a five year old and a ten year old, she is familiar and desensitized with the chaos and noise that typically accompany kids and their friends. She has also been around babies with no issues whatsoever (albeit maybe a tad enthusiastic in trying to sniff and lick their faces!)

How is Maze at home?

Maze is fantastic in the house (now). As a teenager, she looooved to chew and her family’s dining table bear the evidence of that sharky phase. She was also very food motivated and took a while to learn not to counter surf and has jumped a baby gate on more than one occasion. That being said, maturity has been a real blessing and she’s much more trustworthy in the house now.

Maze rarely alert barks (though she does sometimes demand barks) and is generally a quiet dog. She loves sunbathing on the porch or laying on the cool tile ideally with a window/door to the outside cracked. She prefers an x-pen to a crate, but at two years old, she’s now trustworthy enough to free roam.

Health

Maze has completed the health tests recommended by the Eurasier Club of Canada and is eligible to breed.

Her hip and elbow results were conducted 5 weeks shy of the 2-year threshold required by the OFA for these results to be considered "final". The reason for this is that we intended to breed Maze for her third heat cycle, and based on my calculations, she would enter that heat cycle just shy of her second birthday. We intend to update her test results with "final" x-rays in the future, but as her hips were rated excellent, we do not anticipate any dramatic changes or downgrades in her score.

Structure

Maze has beautiful structure, and that's evidence by the numerous awards she's won in the conformation ring. Most recently, she won back-to-back Best in Specialty Shows at the Eurasier Club of Canada's Regional and National Specialty shows. She has also won multiple group placements, with her highest group placement being a Group 2 at the Burlington Kennel & Obedience Club.

The main physical improvements on Victra that I had hoped to get by breeding her with Taiko is better angulation in the rear, and more substance, as Victra is on the very bottom end of the standard. With Maze, I definitely got what I wanted from that breeding, whose rear is a significant improvement on Victra's, and is closer to the middle of the breed standard from a weight perspective.

The main improvements we would be seeking in future generations would be improve on her expression. The breed standard states that the eyes should be slightly slanting. Maze's ears are also a little larger than ideal, so the main thing we are looking for from a male is more of the classic Eurasier expression.
